Painting...the process

From Larry: "For the last year or so, I have been working on contract paintings for private individuals. This painting is being done for a very nice family in NY. They have waited almost two years for me to do this for them and have been very patient and understanding. I must make it clear that this painting is sold. I thought it would be neat for you all to see the process, in real time. When we post this, it will catch you up to where I am currently and will be updated weekly. I hope you enjoy it!"

Step 1 - Completed drawing blown up and pieced together to scale 30"x40". The client wanted the snout of the dragon on the left to be a little longer, so you can see where I have altered that in this step.

Step 4 - Final drawing. As you can see I have made the dragon slightly larger, as well as, the turret in the lower front. The drawing is now ready to be transferred to my board to paint.

Step 5 - This is the final drawing transferred down onto my board. I made a few small changes to the soldiers and added troops in the turret and on the wall.

Step 9 - Started background and finished sky. Mountain and tress are now roughed in. Larry says that the painting is going smooth and under control from what his mind's eye sees. Still a lot of meticulous work to be done...

Step 11 - Blow up of sky...

Step 12 - All the trees and sky are basically finished and the mountains are 90% complete. I still have to apply an orange glaze to the entire painting. I have been experimenting with color on the buildings but am not sure what I want to do yet...

Step 13 - The follow photos are all detail shots of what is basically finished (forest and trees). As you can see, I have already applied the orange tint to the sky right above the mountains on the left (Andrea loved the way that looked...and she usually doesn't have much of an opinion :) I have also added quite a bit of detail to the mountains but they are far from finished.

2 Weeks Into Painting (with a LOT of interruptions)

Step 18 - I put an orange glaze over most of the mountains, forest and part of the sky. Now is when my color starts to get crazy with my camera because the true color in the painting lies somewhere between this and the following pictures. This is one pretty close to the true colors of the sky and mountains.

Step 19 - Same as above but this one is closer to the true color of the trees. Still overall too warm though. My camera seems to really make the blues and purples too strong.

Step 20 - Same as above but close up. I had to touch up the mountains after I added the glaze. Parts of the mountains were still wet so I had to correct them. This is why some of the mountains look white and some look orange so they still need some work.

Step 21 - The overall color here looks pretty good but the trees are a little too orange. When I talk about glazing with orange, I use a straight cadmium orange glaze, thinned with my medium, and add a transparent orange film to the painting.

Step 22 - The colors here are very very close (Andrea said this looks the closest) with the exception to the area to the right of the tower. The shadows from the trees are too dark. As you can see I am still playing with colors on the buildings and roofs.

Step 23 - Same as above just close up…

Step 24 - Same as above but there was a strong glare to the right so it picked up some of the texture of the board. I am now 2.5 weeks into the painting, however, I have not got much done at all for the last few days because my wife’s mother passed away over the weekend.

Step 25 - Started to lay a base coat on the towers of the castle.

Step 26 - Same as above. I am still having trouble with my lighting so you will notice in many of my photos, the painting seems brighter on the left. My light source is to the left which is making the painting appear darker (with more contrast) on the right. This is especially noticeable in some of the pictures in the next steps.

Step 36 - Color overall is pretty close. Remember my light source is to the left. I am working on the detail of the castle now and have added some initial color to the dragon.

Step 43 - Doing some more work on the dragon and detail of the castle.

Step 44 - Same as above...

Step 45 - I glazed over the towers with the same orange glaze and have done some more work on the dragon. It has good base colors now but needs more work. The painting is still appearing darker on the right than it truly is. The blues are much more subtle than what they appear (especially in the dragon) Because of my light source, parts of the painting are appearing darker (with more contrast) than they are.

Step 50 - This takes me up to January 26th. We had a major ice storm here and were without electric and internet. Yesterday 02-02-2009 was my first day back painting. We'll have another update by Friday!

Step 51 - First day back after the ice storm. I am working on the the men on the wall and roughed on the blue dragon. The colors of the dragons were chosen by the client.

Step 66 - I have been working on the blue dragon, but it has been about 3 days since I took my last set of photos. I have been working on the dragon and details. I added another layer of blue to the dragon to start establishing anatomy in detail, dirtied it up, and added another layer of blue. Then I started painting the scales and giving it dimension. Once that was done, I added the horns and the teeth, and then glazed over it with a light orange glaze.

As of February 11th, the painting is officially done (the size is 30" x 40") It is now in Nashville getting professionally scanned. When we receive the scan, Larry will color correct it, and we will post the final photos which will show the truest colors. When it was all said and done, the painting took just under six week with a lot of interruptions including a death in the family, an ice storm and no power for days...

We have had such a positive response to this and thank everyone for all the feedback we have received. Larry wanted me to add that we will definitely do more of these step-by-step postings in the furture.
